Course Description:

This course will focus on combining the principles of sensory integration
with the DIR model (Floortime) to assess the child in play to determine
their sensory modulation (registration and regulation), affect, interaction,
ability to problem solve and elaborate ideas. The presentation will combine
these approaches and reference neuro-biological research to support this
approach. Participants will develop expertise in clinical assessment,
treatment skills and developing strategies for interaction and management
in the home and school.
Course Objectives:

The participants will:
- Understand the
relationship between the current neurological research of individuals
within the autistic spectrum and current clinical practice.
- Understand the
range of sensory modulation and the behavior of the child within the
autistic spectrum.
- Learn strategies
that increase the child's attention to task and affective interaction.
- Understand the
interaction between the sensory systems (vestibular, proprioceptive,
tactile, visual and auditory systems) and how this relates to attention,
interaction, social responsivity, postural and behavioral responses.
- Learn the compatibility
between the DIR model and the interactive style used in sensory integrative
techniques.
- Learn strategies
to help a child become more successful in activities of daily living.
- Learn strategies
to enhance the dance of social interaction with a child.
- Identify the most
appropriate strategies for the child who is over-responsive to his environment
and the most appropriate strategies for the child who is under-responsive.
- Recognize when
and how affect is the most appropriate strategy to engage a child.
- Recognize when
and how to use physical activity to engage the child.
- Recognize when
and how to use language to engage the child, and help them problem solve
and elaborate ideas.
DIR
- Developmental, Individual-Difference, Relationship
Based Treatment. This treatment approach, also described as Floortime, was
developed by Stanley Greenspan, MD and Serena Wieder, Ph.D. This framework
provides the therapist and those who interact with the child a greater understanding
of the child's functioning and how to interact with the child including
these core capacities: regulation and attention; mutual engagement; purposeful
interaction with the use of gestures; more complex gestures and problem
solving; elaborating ideas, pretend play and creating symbols; and building
bridges between ideas (emotional thinking).
Course Participants:

Occupational, Physical, and Speech Therapists, Psychologists, and Teachers.
Please note that the treatment sessions presented will be provided by
occupational and physical therapists.
Course Level:

Intermediate. This course is appropriate for those that have previously
attended a Totally Treatment course, and those who have not.
Schedule:

Day 1 & 2 |
| 9:00
AM - 4:30 PM |
VIDEO
PRESENTATIONS OF CLIENTS TO INCLUDE:
- Working with
parents on sensory modulation issues as they contribute to functional
difficulties. This includes defensiveness, attentional and self
regulatory difficulties, sensory discrimination and motor planning.
- Treatment
styles and interventions to address sensory modulation, sensory
discrimination and motor planning.
- Parent "coaching"
including handling and interaction to facilitate attention, engagement,
problem solving and elaborating play.
- Extensive
videotape of the client over the course of their treatment analyzed
with treatment sessions that "worked" and those that
were more challenging.
- Sensory diet
for home and school management.
- Functional
outcome.
- In-service
to teachers regarding sensory processing and its impact on a client
in the classroom available for participants to view during lunch
break.
